Several teenage kids that live close to me are spending their summer vacation robbing our neighborhood. We have had 17 homes broken into within a one block radius of my home over the past two months.
I feel trapped in my home now because I refuse to leave the house unattended unless it's absolutely necessary.
We have and always use an alarm system. Not that having an alarm would stop them from attempting to raid my home. Since it takes the cops 15-20 minutes to get here, it's not likely that the alarm will protect our belongings. An interesting fact is that many of my neighbors that have been robbed didn't bother to set their alarm.
One thing that will make me feel better would be to reinforce our doors to help prevent it from being kicked in (that's the chosen form of entering the homes around here). We also need to change the deadbolts out to the key-only type, it's a pain but at least they can't break the window and reach through to unlock the door that way.
Our neighborhood is trying to band together to stop this. We are organizing a neighborhood watch program and spending time watching for people with suspicious behavior. Hopefully this will bring us together as a community and nip this crime spree in the bud.
