I had such a good time this weekend. It was so nice to relax and focus on having fun with some wonderful women. We headed down to Tybee Island about 10:30am on Friday morning. It takes almost 5 hours to get there, so we made just a few quick stops for lunch & restrooms in order to make it to the condo by dinner time.
Once we arrived we stopped to pick up some fresh seafood for dinner. We got 1/2 a bushel of blue crabs, 3 lbs of shrimp and some scallions. The guy at the seafood market was very helpful. He helped us choose and was very patient while we try to decide how much to purchase. Of course, the fact that he really enjoyed having so many ladies smiling & flirting with him may have helped him find patience during our indecisiveness. lol
Once we unloaded and got settled at the condo, cooking prep started. While waiting for the pots to boil, some of us headed down to the beach to get our feet wet before dinner. Melody, Jamie, Lara, & Sara stayed in while Jess, Stacy, Timara, Amber and myself decided on enjoying a few minutes in the sand. Surprisingly this was Stacy's first time seeing an ocean, sharing that experience with her was so much fun for the rest of us. In addition to finding cool sea shell souvenirs for Stacy, we were even lucky enough to see a little sea star hanging out in a tide pool. Of course the sea star wasn't a souvenir, we left him where we found him.
After rinsing off our feet, the "cooks" went about their task, while the rest of us enjoyed the smells of Old Bay Seasoning filling the rooms. We all got a kick out of the ladies wrestling crabs from the bag in order to murder them, I mean boil them.
Next, a large black table cloth was spread onto the table to keep the mess manageable after dinner. All but one of us ate at least one crab, with several polishing off many more. It was a very yummy meal and I for one appreciate all the effort it took to make it happen. Thank you Jess, Sara and Stacy!!!!
I was so pooped that I barely remember most of the rest of the evening. The only thing that sticks out for me is eating ice cream, hanging out on the porch & a silly dance off between Timara and myself (she totally kicked my ass because I was laughing so hard I thought I'd pee my pants). The two of us totally "dance raped" Amber. (Dance Rape-Grinding against/lap dancing a person without their consent.) Sorry Amber.
Saturday morning came WAY too fast. I rarely sleep well in strange beds. I woke up off and on all night long. At 7:30am, after hearing others moving around, I decided to get my arse up. I don't really know what time I hit the beach but I think it was around or just prior to 10 am. I brought a small bag of chips, a bottle of water, a book, towel and a chair with me. A few minutes later, several more ladies joined me. For some crazy reason, someone started feeding the birds. BIG mistake because from that point on, we always had a flock hanging close by. If they heard one crinkle or rattle of a bag, you were practically attacked. lol By noon, almost everyone had headed back to the condo and by one, the last of us called it a day. Normally, I could stay out all day but I was getting hungry & that bag of chips was already gone. After dropping off my things and changing out of my swimsuit, I walked down to Lighthouse Pizza ( www.lighthousepizza.net ) for a combo (2 slices & a drink for $5). The pizza was very yummy and the customer service was GREAT! Lighthouse Pizza is close to several beach shops. In an attempt to fit in with the group, I looked for a cute beach dress to wear out that night. I really didn't find anything that looked good on me. Such a bummer but stopping by a daiquiri bar for something yummy to drink on my walk back "home" cheered me right up. ;)
We had reservations at The Lady & Sons ( www.ladyandsons.com ) for 6:30pm, so we all showered, dressed, did a shot of tequila & were in the van by 4:30pm. We arrived about an hour before our reservations, so we just walked around for a moment and then stopped by the Velvet Elvis Lounge for a few drinks before dinner.
Dinner was WONDERFUL. Most of us had The Lady's Southern Buffet and were stuffed like Thanksgiving Day turkeys when we left the place. Just like Thanksgiving Day, I felt like taking a nap for about an hour after my meal.
Thankfully I got my second wind before we hit Savannah Smiles Dueling Piano Bar ( http://www.savannahga.net/activities/savannahsmilespianobar.html ). This was my first time at a dueling piano bar and I had a blast! So much fun! Jamie ended up dancing on a chair at one point and Lara was obsessed with the fact that her face was numb from drinking. lol Melody got hit on by a young girl that was in the military and then she had the pianists bring Timara up for a dance on stage. All of us were ready to head back home by midnight, except for Lara & Jamie. The two of them wanted to drink until the bars closed and thankfully Jess & Sara decided to stay out to keep an eye on their drunk asses.
I did not sleep well this night either. My stomach was hurting on top of my normal strange bed thing so I only got about three hours of sleep. My stomach continued to bother me so much that I decided to just go ahead and get up when I woke up about seven am. I ate some dry cereal and drank some water trying to settle my belly. It didn't work, so I decided to hit the beach one last time. It was so peaceful that I totally lost track of time. The white noise of the waves, the texture of the sand, the cool wetness of the water, and the breeze kissing my face. *sigh* What can I say? I am in love with the beach. She completes me. I say "She" because it's so beautiful it could only be a female. I walked for two hours. Yes, I said TWO hours. As long as I didn't try to bend over to pick up shells and I walked slowly, it didn't bother my stomach at all.
Good Morning Sunshine.
Here is Mother Nature's smile.
I think this shot is cute because the two barges in the distance look like eyes and the wave up front looks like a mouth.
My peacefulness didn't last long. Once I arrived back at the condo the frenzy of "gotta get out of here" was in full force. It completely tightened my chest and made me short of breath. I left myself plenty of time to get my stuff together based on the time I was quoted but apparently I missed the memo/text that had the time change on it. I don't do well being rushed but I'm so happy to say that I didn't take anyone's head off. Totally patting myself on the back for that one. Just ask my family if you don't believe how ugly I can get when I'm rushed or I haven't had enough sleep. lol Anyway, the ride back was good. We still chatted but we were all much more low key than we had been on the drive down. I think we were all ready to get to our cozy nests, rest, and enjoy our families again. Although my stomach was still rolling, I was able to keep it together during the drive. So thankful for that one.
What have I learned.
1. I'm a serious light-weight when it comes to drinking alcohol.
2. Never stop growing and trying new things. (I had several "firsts" this trip.)
3. Double check ALL deadlines multiple times when traveling with a group, paying close attention to the people I am riding with and don't assume that I'll be informed of changes.
4. I should take a vacation from time to time for myself, all by myself. I hung out by myself a lot on this trip and you know what......I LOVED it! I could totally see myself vacationing all alone one day (if my hubby would be cool with it.)
5. I need to go on another Girl's Weekend away. It was so much fun spending time with and getting to know better the wonderful ladies in my life.
Life is good. It's amazing that even the screams, cries and whines just don't sting as bad these post vacation days. I hope it lasts a bit longer because I am enjoying this new, mellower me. I totally needed the break from family life but boy did I ever enjoy all the cuddles & hugs I got as soon as I arrived back home. Thank you Timara and Jamie for setting up this trip & bringing us all together!
To all the special women from my "Girl's Gone Wild in Georgia" adventure............
You ladies ROCK!
